Visitors to the trails are greeted by an informational kiosk that displays a large, color-coded trail map with information including distance, elevation and location compiled by Geisinger's Sports Medicine Department. Trails have been named after common medical terms. Click to download a copy of the trail map.
"The stewardship trails at GMC are a great place to stay in shape, breathe in some clean air and enjoy the seasonal wildlife," said Matthew McElroy, DO, a sports medicine physician at GMC. "Outdoor activities like biking and running are a great way to stay healthy, and members of the community should take advantage of this hidden gem right in their back yard."
In total, the eight miles of Geisinger Stewardship trails are maintained by local trail enthusiasts. Management of this portion of the Pennsylvania Stewardship Forest is part of Geisinger's ongoing commitment to environmental protection.
Visitors to the trail may park in the Geisinger lot off of Powder Mill Road, for quicker access to the trail. If you wish to walk to these trails from Geisinger Medical Center (approximately a 3/4 mile to the trailhead) follow these directions:
- Walk up through the Geisinger Medical Center campus, bearing right all the way and staying on North Academy Avenue's sidewalks. You will be walking uphill, and around the medical center, past the Knapper Clinic, and then bearing right and walking uphill with Geisinger office buildings on your left. Keep going uphill, passing HealthSouth on your right.
- When you come to the end of North Academy Avenue, take a left onto Red Lane. Walk carefully along this road for a short bit, then take a right on right on Powder Mill Road
- Walk approximately 1/4 mile to the very sharp U turn on this road and you will come to a gated trail entry - this is the trailhead with a map kiosk that shows various trails you can hike.
- Follow only trails that are named for medical terms, as these are Geisinger-owned trails. All other trails are privately owned.
