General surgery sub-internship (Northeast)

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s elective general surgery sub-internship at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., is designed to give interested fourth-year medical students a more in-depth experience in general surgery.

The sub-internship lets you interact directly with residents and faculty with added responsibilities above third-year student expectations. You’ll be able to further explore your interest in surgery with exposure to general surgery, acute care surgery and a variety of surgical specialties. The sub-internship also provides students from outside institutions with an insight into the surgical training model at Geisinger.

Goals and objectives

You’ll rotate on the surgical service for four weeks. The available electives include general surgery, trauma acute care surgery, surgical oncology, colorectal surgery and night float.

You’ll interact in a team setting with third-year students, residents and faculty, and will participate in all clinical and educational activities. Most of the electives will be at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center and, on a selective basis, also at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pa. You may also gain experience for a portion of your sub-internship on the night float service.

  • Gain exposure to the many fields of general surgery and participate in a team approach with members of the residency program and faculty.
  • Assume responsibilities that may include operating room experience, clinical experience on the floors with patient management — including pre-operative and postoperative assessment — and learning opportunities in the surgery clinic.
  • Accept direction on clinical responsibilities by the chief resident on the service to which you are assigned.
  • Actively evaluate patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting under supervision of residents and faculty.
