Internal medicine-pediatrics​

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s combined internal medicine-pediatrics elective in Danville, Pa., exposes medical students to comprehensive medical care of patients across a spectrum of ages.

In addition to providing comprehensive care, you’ll have opportunities to explore the multitude of available career options through interactions with a variety of med-peds trained staff physicians. The rotation elective consists of a combined ambulatory experience in a clinic staffed by med-peds trained physicians, as well as experience working with residents and attendings on an inpatient medicine floor.

Goals and objectives

• Medical knowledge: Acquire core medical knowledge and integrate basic pathophysiology with clinical patient management.
• Patient care: Actively participate in providing patient care that is compassionate, appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems. At all times, act as a patient advocate, promoting overall health, including care at the end of life. 
• Communication and interpersonal skills: Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that let you establish relationships with patients, families and other members of healthcare teams.
• Professionalism: Demonstrate sensitivity to ethical principles and respect for diversity with patients.
• Practice-based learning: Use scientific methods and evidence to investigate, evaluate and improve your patient care practices.
• Systems-based practice: Demonstrate an awareness of the larger healthcare system to effectively call on system resources to provide care that is of optimal value.
