Pain medicine

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine at Geisinger Medical Center offers an elective rotation in interventional pain management with Geisinger’s Pain Medicine Department.

The department’s physician staff provides interventions as part of a multidisciplinary program for the chronic pain patient population on an outpatient basis. Our staff is composed of physicians and physician assistants with training and experience in anesthesiology, rehabilitation medicine and neurosurgery. There are 10 pain physicians in Danville and Wilkes-Barre, annually caring for more than 8,000 patients with pain.

In addition to comprehensive interventional-based techniques for our patients, we provide complementary modalities in our clinic including behavioral medicine consultation, chronic pain medication management, orthopaedic spine surgery consultation, rehabilitation consultation and acupuncture. You’ll be integrated into our services by becoming active in the daily care of our patients.

Our educational goals include:

  • Learning the basics of pain management
  • Diagnosis of chronic pain conditions
  • Formulation of comprehensive multidisciplinary chronic pain treatment plans
  • Indications for pain interventions
  • An introduction to the technique of fluoroscopically guided spine interventions.

This elective is also offered in conjunction with medical student rotations in anesthesiology and palliative care medicine.
