Pediatric infectious diseases

Our goal is for you to become familiar with common pediatric infectious diseases in the inpatient and outpatient settings at Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. You’ll gain an understanding of the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and recommended treatments of a variety of infectious diseases seen in pediatrics. 

In this rotation, you will learn the approach to choosing appropriate antimicrobial therapy for the most common pediatric infections, including a general understanding of antimicrobial resistance. In addition, you’ll recognize congenital and acquired immune deficiencies, including their presentation, diagnosis and management.

Goals and objectives

You’ll be expected to:

• Function as a member of the pediatric infectious diseases team, seeing inpatients on the consulting service, completing consults on the inpatient unit and having the option to see any interesting patients in the outpatient clinic. 
• Review current literature pertinent to cases seen in the hospital and clinic and be prepared to present the patients succinctly during oral presentation.  
• Write inpatient consultation and progress notes. 
• Complete a written scholarly project. The scholarly project can take the format of a case report, chart review, journal article review, PowerPoint presentation or other review of current literature. 
• Attend regularly scheduled resident conferences, including morning report, intake rounds, noon conference and grand rounds.
