Vascular surgery

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine offers a four-week elective rotation with Geisinger's Section of Vascular Surgery at Geisinger Medical Center.

Our department provides comprehensive care that includes primary interventional procedures such as carotid, peripheral and visceral stenting, thoracic stent grafts and AAA stent grafts, as well as advanced open and endovascular surgical procedures.

You’ll participate in all activities of the vascular service in the operating room, inpatient service and vascular clinic. The experience will give you the opportunity to participate in the comprehensive evaluation of patients with vascular disease, including perioperative assessment and postoperative management. You’ll become acquainted with techniques of non-invasive monitoring and vascular imaging, and you’ll interact with the vascular faculty and fellows, as well as the general surgery residents assigned to the service.

Participation in daily conferences, including clinical sessions, preoperative conferences, staff rounds, morbidity/mortality conferences and monthly journal club, is part of the experience. You’re expected to present at conferences. Opportunities for assistance with clinical research and publications are available.

Goals and objectives

The overall educational objective is for you to become familiar with the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the vascular system, including congenital and acquired diseases.

• Be exposed to the surgical management of patients including preoperative, operative and postoperative care of patients with arterial, venous and lymphatic disease.
• Train in the office practice of vascular surgery with particular emphasis on the techniques on non-invasive monitoring.
• Become fully acquainted with the techniques of vascular imaging.
• Have the opportunity to learn the writing of histories and physicals and of preoperative and postoperative orders.
• You’ll be under the direct supervision of the vascular surgery program director at all times.
