About Geisinger and its School of Spiritual Care

Founded in 1915, Geisinger Medical Center has since expanded to become an entire health system. The 10 hospitals and numerous outpatient facilities provide 1 million people in 44 counties with a complete continuum of quality healthcare.

Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) in Danville is the largest tertiary care teaching hospital in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. GMC maintains the region’s only Level I regional trauma center, with additional qualifications in pediatrics. It houses the Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital and a Women’s Pavilion, which provide specialized care in pediatrics and women’s health. Also home to the Hospital for Advanced Medicine, GMC offers a comprehensive array of highly specialized medical and surgical services including cardiology, neurosciences, transplantation, orthopaedics, and oncology.

Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center (GWV) in Wilkes-Barre and Geisinger Community Medical Center (GCMC) in Scranton are Level II regional trauma centers. On the GWV campus are the Henry Cancer Center, the Pearsall Heart Hospital, the Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital Pediatric Unit, the Brain & Spine Tumor Institute, and a transplant program.

Geisinger’s Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), which is the standard-setting agency in the field of clinical pastoral education.

Geisinger’s School of Spiritual Care must meet program and organizational standards and be periodically reaccredited, ensuring its students receive the highest quality of CPE. The standards for the certification of CPE educators are rigorous and involve several review steps. The Code of Professional Ethics mandates high standards of professional competence and conduct, so students are provided supervision that is knowledgeable and encouraging.

Chaplain Residency

The core of Geisinger's educational design for ministry is its residency in spiritual care. Designed to promote comprehensive pastoral formation, the resident peer group becomes a forum which provides rich insight into the spiritual dimensions of human crisis. Each resident is given the opportunity to carry out ministry in situations of urgent and intense spiritual and emotional need.

Chaplain Internship (Extended CPE)

Geisinger's Extended CPE program is designed for those who prefer a part-time continuing education format. Formal class hours are held one day each week over a 22- week period. Fall and/or spring sessions will be scheduled each year. Some area clergy members have used this CPE program to complete the clinical requirements by the Association of Professional Chaplains.
