Why choose Geisinger for clinical trials?

You should be able to access the most promising new cancer therapies right here. That’s why we’ve partnered with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for decades. In fact, Geisinger is 1 of only 2 Pennsylvania hospital systems in the NCI Community Oncology Research Program. And because your doctors also serve as clinical investigators, quality research is a core part of your daily medical practice.

Your oncologist can oversee every study and integrate new therapies safely into your treatment. With specialized oversight from our Investigational Drug Pharmacy and the support of dedicated research nurses, you’ll have the clarity to focus on having more good days — without the travel days.

FAQs

Are clinical trials safe?

Yes. Your safety and rights are the highest priority. Every trial undergoes rigorous review by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and is closely monitored by the National Cancer Institute and Geisinger’s Human Research Protection Program. Before you begin, we’ll walk you through the informed consent process so you understand every aspect of the study.

How do I find a clinical trial that’s right for me?

The best way to start is by speaking with your oncologist or primary doctor. Our research coordinators can also evaluate your specific diagnosis and location to find a matching trial near you. You can also call 877-204-6081 to speak directly with our oncology research team.

What’s the difference between Phase II and Phase III trials?

Clinical trials move through phases to ensure both safety and effectiveness:

  • Phase II trials focus on how well a new treatment works for a specific type of cancer.
  • Phase III trials compare the new treatment against the current "standard of care" to study if it is more effective or has fewer side effects.

Can I stop participating in a trial after it starts?

Yes. Participation is entirely voluntary. You have the right to change your mind and withdraw from a clinical trial at any time, for any reason. It won’t affect your ability to get standard Geisinger care.
