Why choose Geisinger for atrial fibrillation care?

When you have atrial fibrillation (AFib) — or you're trying to find out if you do — getting the right treatment plan makes all the difference.

AFib causes the heart to beat irregularly and can affect people differently. Some manage it with medication, while others need more advanced treatment.

Here, your care team of electrophysiologists, cardiologists and heart surgeons works together to find the right path forward — whether that's medication management, cardiac ablation or surgery. For those managing AFib with blood-thinning medications, our dedicated Anticoagulation Clinic provides specialized support to help keep you safe and on track.

To get started, ask your primary care provider for a referral.

FAQs

What’s atrial fibrillation (AFib)?

Atrial fibrillation is a type of arrhythmia that causes the heart to beat irregularly, also known as “out of rhythm.” It may happen occasionally or become more persistent over time. Without treatment, AFib can affect how blood flows through the heart and may increase the risk of stroke or heart failure.

How do I know if I have AFib symptoms?

AFib symptoms can vary from person to person. Some people notice symptoms regularly, while others may not notice any at all.

Symptoms include:

  • Fluttering or rapid heartbeat (heart palpitations)
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest discomfort

Can stress and anxiety cause AFib episodes?

Stress, anxiety, caffeine and alcohol may trigger temporary heart palpitations or AFib episodes in some people. Long-term stress can also affect overall heart health. If you frequently have irregular heartbeats, dizziness or chest discomfort, your doctor may recommend evaluation and heart rhythm testing.

How do you diagnose AFib?

Heart specialists diagnose AFib using heart rhythm monitoring, imaging and other tests that evaluate heart function and electrical activity.

Tests include:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)
  • Holter monitor or other heart monitoring
  • Blood tests for atrial fibrillation risk factors and related conditions
  • Chest X-ray
  • Echocardiogram
  • Stress testing

Your doctor may recommend additional testing depending on your symptoms and medical history.
