Mitral regurgitation, also called a mitral heart valve, happens when your mitral valve isn't closing properly. Instead of flowing forward, some blood leaks backwards into the lungs. Over time, that can cause symptoms like shortness of breath, heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
Treatment depends on how severe the leak is. You may be able to manage a mild case with medication, or need replacement in a severe case. But when repair is an option, that's the approach we take because it’s often safer and leads to better outcomes.
Here, you’ll find a range of treatment options, including transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER), or a minimally invasive transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) procedure. We're one of just a few hospitals in the state offering it. And with locations in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, you can get care close to home. Just ask your primary care provider or cardiologist for a referral.
