TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat aortic stenosis — a condition where the aortic valve narrows and restricts blood flow. Unlike traditional open heart surgery, TAVR is done through a small incision, typically in the groin.
Using a thin, flexible catheter, your doctor guides a replacement valve into your heart. Then they position it inside the damaged valve. Once in place, the new valve expands and starts working immediately, restoring healthy blood flow. The procedure usually takes less than 1 hour and involves less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery than open surgery.
We were the first heart program in central and northeastern Pennsylvania to offer TAVR, and we perform more TAVR procedures than any other program in the region.
