Why choose Geisinger for varicose vein treatment?

Varicose veins can be a cosmetic concern, but they can also cause real discomfort. And left untreated, they can lead to more serious problems, like leg wounds and blood clots. The good news: You don't have to just accept them.

Here, you'll find minimally invasive varicose vein treatments that shrink veins and relieve uncomfortable symptoms before your condition gets worse. Your doctor will ask about your lifestyle, symptoms and how your veins are affecting your daily life. From there, you'll work together to build a care plan. Treatments range from lifestyle changes and compression stockings to spider vein injections, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), glue ablation and laser treatment.

Whatever your goal, we’re here to get you feeling and looking your best with the least invasive approach possible. Just ask your primary care provider for a referral.

FAQs

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins most often found in the legs and ankles. They're visible on the surface of your skin, which can be a cosmetic concern. But they often cause uncomfortable symptoms too. That’s where treatment comes in.

We offer minimally invasive treatments that shrink varicose veins and provide symptom relief. You can also get early varicose vein treatment so your condition doesn’t get worse over time.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins. They're usually treated for cosmetic reasons, since they're typically not painful. But left untreated, they can develop into varicose veins, which can lead to leg wounds and blood clots.

What are the signs and symptoms of varicose veins?

Varicose vein signs and symptoms include:

  • Achy or heavy feeling in legs
  • Bulgy veins
  • Burning or throbbing in legs
  • Dark purple or blue veins
  • Itching around the veins
  • Leg cramping
  • Pain after sitting or standing for a long time
  • Skin discoloration around the veins

What are the risk factors for varicose veins?

Certain behaviors, genetics and risk factors can raise your chances of developing varicose veins:

  • Age: Varicose veins most often occur in people over 50.
  • Gender: Women are more prone to developing varicose veins than men.
  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes, increased blood pressure and added pressure from the uterus raise the risk.
  • Weight: Excess body fat increases risk of varicose veins.
  • Work: Sitting or standing for long periods without moving raises your risk.

How do you diagnose varicose veins?

Diagnosing varicose veins is simple and may include:

  • Physical exam: Your doctor will physically examine your legs and ankles to assess your varicose veins. They’ll ask you to describe your symptoms, including pain or aches.
  • Ultrasound: An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your body, including your veins. These can allow your doctor to check for any blood clots and to monitor the flow of your blood.

How do you treat varicose veins?

Treatment options may include:

  • Compression stockings: Worn throughout the day, these help blood move more efficiently through your legs. They're typically the first line of treatment and easy to find at most pharmacies.
  • Glue ablation: A catheter delivers surgical glue to permanently seal the vein, causing it to collapse and improving its appearance.
  • Laser treatment: Strong bursts of light slowly fade the appearance of varicose veins — no incisions needed.
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): A catheter delivers heat to seal off blood flow to the affected vein. No incision is made.
  • Stab phlebectomy: Tiny incisions allow your surgeon to remove the vein directly, and usually stitches aren't needed. This may be used alongside other treatments.
  • Lifestyle changes: Your doctor may also recommend changes to your diet, exercise routine or smoking habits.
