FAQs

What is pediatric ear, nose and throat care?

When your child has trouble with their ears, nose or throat, or related areas of the head and neck, a pediatric ENT is the specialist who can help. They’re also called ENT doctors or otolaryngologists.

When should I ask my child’s primary doctor for an ENT referral?

You might consider an ENT specialist if your child’s symptoms happen a lot over time or don’t clear up with standard care. Common reasons for a referral include:

  • Sleep or breathing issues: Loud snoring, mouth breathing or pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Ear concerns: Multiple ear infections in 1 year or persistent fluid that seems to affect their hearing or speech
  • Chronic throat issues: Frequent cases of strep throat or tonsillitis that keep them home from school
  • Persistent sinus trouble: Long-lasting congestion or sinus pressure that doesn't improve with allergy medicine

How will a doctor diagnose my child’s ENT condition?

Your child’s ENT specialist will start with a thorough health history and a physical exam. To get a clear picture of your child’s health, we may use:

  • Hearing and balance tests: Non-invasive screenings to check for fluid, hearing loss or inner-ear issues
  • Endoscopy: Using a tiny, flexible camera (called an endoscope) to view the nasal passages or throat
  • Imaging: CTs or MRIs to take an up-close look at details inside the head and neck, if needed

Who will be on my child’s ENT team

Every child’s needs are different — and their care should be, too. Your child’s team of compassionate pediatric ENT specialists will build a personalized plan around what your child needs. Depending on your child’s condition, their team may include:
