FAQs

How do I know if inpatient care is right for me?

Inpatient care can be a good fit when your mental health condition needs intensive, round-the-clock support. Examples include a crisis, risk of self-harm, risk of harming others or being unable to manage daily needs.

If you're not sure where to start, that's okay. Your primary care provider or nearest emergency room can help determine the right level of care for your situation.

What’s the difference between an outpatient and inpatient behavioral health program?

Inpatient care involves staying full-time at a facility, like a hospital, for intensive, round-the-clock treatment. Outpatient care allows you to get therapy, counseling and medication management while living at home. Outpatient services vary in intensity, from weekly therapy sessions to our Intensive Outpatient Program, which provides more structured support.

What is the Geisinger Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

The IOP is a structured level of care for people who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy but don't require inpatient hospitalization.

The IOP meets 3 half-days a week and includes group therapy, psycho-education and medication management overseen by a psychiatrist. It can be a good alternative to inpatient care or as a transitional step after hospitalization.
