FAQs

What’s the difference between reconstructive and cosmetic surgery?

Reconstructive surgery is performed to restore form and function after trauma, cancer removal or from congenital conditions. Typically, reconstructive surgery is considered medically necessary and covered by most health insurance plans.

Cosmetic surgery is performed to enhance the overall appearance by reshaping and adjusting the anatomy to make it align with your aesthetic goals. For those reasons, cosmetic surgery is considered elective and isn’t covered by insurance. Popular examples of cosmetic surgery include breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck and face lift.

What types of breast surgery are available?

From reconstruction after mastectomy to breast augmentation, you’ll work with specialists who will create a personalized treatment plan to help you feel your best. Your options include:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast lift (mastopexy), with or without augmentation
  • Breast reconstruction with implants
  • Breast reconstruction with tissue (DIEP)
  • Breast reduction, including male breast reduction (gynecomastia)

Can you treat cleft lip and cleft palate?

Yes. For children born with a cleft lip and/or palate, our pediatric plastic surgeons can help. Surgery typically lasts a few hours, followed by a brief hospital stay. Your child’s care will also include Geisinger’s Cleft Palate Team.

Do you offer body contouring?

Yes. Whether you have loose skin from weight loss, pregnancy or aging, or you have stubborn areas of fat that don’t go away with exercise, our plastic surgeons have multiple options available to help you shape and refine your body.

What nonsurgical options do you have?

Here, you’ll have access to several treatments that don’t require surgery, including:

  • Botox®
  • Filler
  • Microneedling
  • Sclerotherapy to treat blood vessels
