Junior Volunteer Program

Are you a high school student between ages 15 and 18 with a passion for helping others and an interest in healthcare careers? Apply to our Junior Volunteer Program (JVP), a dynamic 6-week summer experience that combines meaningful service with interactive learning. 

Through structured volunteer opportunities and engaging educational sessions, you’ll explore various healthcare career paths while making a real impact in your community.

Program requirements

Applicants must:

  • Apply online and submit all required materials
  • Provide 2 references and a 500-word essay
  • Participate in an interview
  • Attend a mandatory orientation
  • Commit to serving 6 – 7 hours per week during the 6-week summer program
  • Complete a minimum of:
    • 40 service hours
    • 15 educational hours
    • Participation in at least 5 of the 6 weeks

  • Geisinger Lewistown Hospital (Lewistown)
  • Geisinger Medical Center (Danville)

Application process

The admission process is competitive and space in the program is limited.

2026 key dates

  • Feb. 1 – Feb. 20
    Submit online application starting Feb. 1, 2026. A team member will follow up with next steps.
  • Feb. 20
    Deadline for returning JVP participants to notify staff of intent to return.
  • Feb. 23 – 27 
    Submit your essay and make sure references are received.
  • March 16 – April 10
    Attend a group interview (evening or Saturday options available).
  • April 13 – 17
    Acceptance notifications sent via email.
  • April 20 – May 1 
    Complete a free Geisinger health screening, including drug and nicotine testing.
  • May 2 – 30
    Attend 1 mandatory orientation session: Scranton – May 2, Lewistown – May 9, Danville – May 17, Wilkes-Barre – May 30.
  • June 15 – 19 
    Returning 2nd- and 3rd-year participants selected as JVP Leaders attend 3 days of leadership training.
  • June 22 – 31 
    Program begins. Participants serve 6 – 7 hours weekly and attend at least 1 educational session (in-person or virtual) each week. Sessions run Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.  

Additional requirements 

  • Complete required clearances upon turning 18
  • Fulfill any additional training prior to service
  • Meet Geisinger’s vaccination requirements

Service opportunities for minors are limited. Completion of the summer JVP is required before volunteering at other times.

Aspirations in Medicine and Healthcare Initiatives: A career exploration program

Are you a 10th or 11th grade student curious about careers in healthcare? Our Aspirations in Medicine and Healthcare Initiatives (AiM HI) program offers a unique, 1-day interactive experience for you to explore a wide range of healthcare professions — from clinical roles to behind-the-scenes careers that keep hospitals running. 

This event is offered in partnership with your local school district, so talk with your school counselor to learn how you can participate. 

AiM HI event locations & schedule

AiM HI is hosted annually in 3 Geisinger regions:

  • Western Region
    January – Geisinger School of Nursing, Lewistown
  • Northeast Region 
    March – Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre
  • Central Region
    October – Geisinger Medical Center, Danville

Each event brings together students from surrounding school districts for a full day of hands-on learning and career discovery.

How to participate

Participation is coordinated through local school districts. Students must register through their school counselor or career counselor.
