They all work together with one goal: getting you stable, then connecting you with the care you need as quickly as possible. Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center are the only Level I trauma centers in central and northeastern Pennsylvania.

What’s a trauma center?

A trauma center is a specialized hospital, equipped to provide immediate, complex critical care for patients with severe or life-threatening injuries. Geisinger has Level I, II and IV trauma centers throughout central and northeastern Pennsylvania, so advanced care is always close by.

What’s a Level I trauma center?

A Level I trauma center provides the highest level of trauma care available. You can get around-the-clock critical care and comprehensive care from injury through rehabilitation. These centers also offer prevention and public education resources and serve as regional leaders in trauma teaching and research.

Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre are both Level I trauma centers. Each offers:

  • A hybrid operating room where imaging and surgery can be performed simultaneously, helping precisely diagnose and treat anyone with a traumatic injury
  • ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), an advanced therapy that delivers healthy oxygen to the blood

Geisinger Medical Center also has a dedicated ICU with specially trained staff for multidisciplinary critical care.

  • Trauma centers for critical injuries: Our Level I trauma centers have trauma surgeons, ER doctors and nurses who are equipped to give the highest level of care 24/7.
  • Specialized care: Many of our surgeons have completed fellowship training in specific types of surgery, so your care focuses on getting you the best possible outcome.
  • Support services and amenities: An ER visit can be stressful. Our hospitals have spiritual care, interpreters, patient liaisons, complimentary Wi-Fi, ATMs, healthy dining options, gift shops and notary public services, among other amenities.
  • Injury prevention programs: Because you deserve to be prepared for the unexpected, we offer free injury prevention programs on topics ranging from pedestrian safety to gun locks.
