Why choose Geisinger for bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery is a lifelong commitment — so you want a partner who's in it for the long haul. Here, you're the center of your program, supported by specialist physicians, dietitians and nurses.

Our fellowship-trained bariatric surgeons specialize in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted techniques. For you, that means less scarring, less pain and quicker recovery.

But surgery is only part of your plan. Our goal is helping you lose weight and keep it off, so we offer nutritional guidance and lifestyle education too.

And the results hold up: Patients see an average peak weight loss of 31.8% at 18 months, with 80% still engaged in follow-up care 4 years after surgery.

Both programs hold American College of Surgeons MBSAQIP accreditation — the national standard for bariatric surgery quality and safety. And with locations in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, your care is close to home.

FAQs

What’s bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery refers to a group of procedures designed to help you lose weight and improve your overall health. It works in a few different ways, depending on the type of procedure you have.

What requirements do I have to meet for bariatric surgery?

Weight loss surgery may be right for you if your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or higher, or if your BMI is greater than 30 and you have at least 1 obesity-related health condition (including things like diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, high blood pressure or a need for knee or hip replacement).

What types of bariatric surgery do you offer?

We offer the following bariatric surgeries:

  • Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass): In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a surgeon creates a stomach pouch that guides food straight from the pouch to the small intestine.
  • Sleeve gastrectomy: A laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy procedure turns the stomach into a narrow tube by removing much of the stomach.
  • BPD-DS (biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) and SADI (single anastomosis duodenoileostomy): This procedure reduces the size of the stomach and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine so you absorb fewer calories.
  • Minimally invasive revisional bariatric surgery: Our surgeons can usually treat most problems associated with previous bariatric procedures using an endoscopic or minimally invasive surgical approach.
  • Endoscopic bariatric surgery including sleeve gastroplasty: Surgeons reduce stomach size without incisions using stitches. This procedure is only appropriate for some patients.
  • Management of laparoscopic adjustable gastric bands: While gastric bands are no longer used for initial bariatric surgery, we have the expertise to manage patients who still have gastric bands in place.
  • Adolescent bariatric surgery: Some teenagers with medical conditions associated with obesity may be candidates for bariatric surgery. Adolescent patients have a team with expertise in both pediatrics and obesity.
