FAQs

What’s sleep medicine?

Sleep medicine is a specialty focused on diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. While many people associate sleep medicine with CPAP therapy for sleep apnea, specialists also treat conditions such as insomnia, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome and sleep-wake cycle disorders using a range of diagnostic tools and treatments.

How can I see a sleep medicine specialist?

If you think you may have a sleep disorder, talk with your primary care provider. They can evaluate your symptoms and refer you to a sleep medicine specialist for testing and treatment.

What’s a sleep study?

A sleep study is a test that monitors your breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels and other body functions while you sleep. It helps diagnose conditions such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy and other sleep disorders. Depending on your condition, testing may take place in a sleep center or at home.

Can I do a sleep test at home?

Yes, home testing lets you complete the study in your own bed while still giving your care team the information they need to make a diagnosis. Your provider will determine whether home testing is right for you.
