Why choose Geisinger for gynecologic surgery?

Weighing surgery for a gynecological condition? You're already doing something right: getting answers and taking your health seriously.

Gynecological surgery covers a range of procedures, from removing fibroids or ovarian cysts to treating endometriosis or pelvic organ prolapse. Many of these use minimally invasive techniques like laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and robotic-assisted surgery. That means smaller incisions, less pain, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to your routine. Most procedures don't require a hospital stay at all.

You'll meet with a surgeon who listens first. They'll explain what's going on in your body, lay out your options — surgical and nonsurgical — and help you decide what makes sense for your body and your life. No question is off the table. Whatever path you choose, you'll have a care team with you at every step.

FAQs

What is a salpingectomy?

In an IVF treatment cycle, your specialist will use fertility drugs to gently stimulate your ovaries to help produce mature eggs. When ready, we’ll retrieve your eggs and combine them with sperm from your partner or a donor in a special dish to produce high-quality embryos, which we closely monitor. Then we place a carefully selected embryo or embryos in your uterus in a process called an embryo transfer. This boosts your chances of pregnancy.

What is a laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to view and treat conditions inside the abdomen and pelvis. Your surgeon makes one or a few small incisions and inserts a thin, lighted camera to see your organs without opening your abdomen. It's widely used in gynecology to diagnose and treat endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids and pelvic pain — often in a single procedure. Recovery is typically faster than in open surgery and there is a lower risk for infection.

What is a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy lets your surgeon see inside your uterus using a thin, lighted scope inserted through your cervix — no incisions needed. It's considered the gold standard for diagnosing and treating conditions like abnormal bleeding, polyps, fibroids and uterine scarring. In some cases, your surgeon can diagnose and treat a problem in the same visit.

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is surgery to remove the uterus. It's the most common non-obstetric (not related to pregnancy) surgical procedure among women, and may be recommended for conditions like fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal bleeding or pelvic organ prolapse. Depending on your situation, a hysterectomy can be done vaginally, laparoscopically or robotically. These options lead to smaller incisions, less pain, lower risk of infection and faster recovery than traditional open surgery

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue from the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus, such as on your ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder or even organs outside of your pelvis.

It affects about 1 in 10 women of reproductive age and can cause chronic pelvic pain or infertility in some cases. Treatment of endometriosis depends on your symptoms and goals of care. Most patients are successfully treated with non-hormonal or hormonal medications, but surgical excision of lesions may benefit some women.

What is a fibroid tumor?

Fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or around the wall of the uterus. They're extremely common — up to 70% of women have them by menopause. Many fibroids cause no symptoms at all. When they do, symptoms can include heavy periods, pelvic pressure, lower back pain and frequent urination. Treatment options range from medication to minimally invasive procedures to surgery, depending on your symptoms and whether you want to have children in the future.

Feel the confidence that comes with having a dedicated team for every aspect of your care, from the exam and waiting rooms to the operating and recovery rooms. We offer:

  • Specially trained surgeons: Here, your gynecologic surgery team is trained in both open and minimally invasive procedures. That includes gynecologists, urogynecologists and reproductive endocrinologists — so no matter what's going on, you'll get care from someone who specializes in it.
  • Advanced minimally invasive procedures: Surgeons can treat most gynecologic conditions vaginally, hysteroscopically, laparoscopically or with robotic assistance using the da Vinci® system. Smaller incisions mean less pain, less scarring and a faster recovery — and because the procedure is often outpatient, you go home the same day.
  • Coordinated care: Your OB-GYN and gynecologic surgeon work together on your treatment plan. Whether that means medication, surgery or a combination of both, you'll always know what's happening and why.
