If you have a BillPay account with communication preferences set to either digital or paper billing, your preferences are transferred to MyChart, and you’ll continue to receive your bill in the same way you have before.
If you don’t have communication preferences set in either BillPay or MyChart, your billing statement notifications are sent by text, email or MyChart app notification.

You may not have notifications turned on. To check your notification settings in MyChart:
Geisinger will reach out to you if you have an outstanding balance. At 30 days past due, a second statement notification will be sent. Be sure to check your notification preferences in MyChart.
At 60 days past due, a paper statement will be sent to your address on file. At 90 days past due, another paper statement will be mailed to you.
Once your statement is available, you will have the option to create a payment plan from your Account Summary in MyChart. Creating a payment plan means a set amount will be automatically charged to your credit card or deducted from your bank account on the same date each month.
You can choose the amount and the date. However, the system requires a minimum payment based on the total amount you owe.
If needed, you can update an existing payment plan by changing the monthly amount, payment date or payment method. Keep in mind:

Start by checking if your insurance company has received and processed the claim. If they haven’t, review your insurance policy to determine if the service is covered. If you don’t know, call your insurance company. They’ll have the most accurate and up-to-date information about your policy and your claim.
If your insurance is Medicare, Geisinger Health Plan or Pennsylvania Medical Assistance (Medicaid): We submit all covered charges to your insurance company and receive direct payment to the extent of your coverage. You are responsible for deductible, coinsurance and non-covered service amounts, which are reflected on your billing statement. For more information regarding your insurance coverage, use following links:
If your insurance is Highmark: We submit all covered charges to Highmark. If we receive direct payment, your billing statement will reflect the deductible, coinsurance and non-covered service amounts. If Highmark sends payment to you, your billing statement from Geisinger will reflect full charges and you are responsible for such. For more information, visit:
If your insurance is another insurance plan or a commercial, worker's compensation or no-fault plan: If you've signed the appropriate authorization forms, we submit all covered charges to your insurance company and receive direct payment to the extent of your coverage. Your billing statement will then reflect only the deductible, coinsurance and non-covered service amounts, which you're responsible for. If you haven't authorized your insurance company to make direct payment to Geisinger, you'll be billed immediately for total charges.
If your insurance is major medical: You’re responsible for filing all major medical claims. This statement can be used to file a claim to major medical. Contact your insurance company or employer for how and where to submit your major medical claims.

Payments received after the statement date will appear on your next statement.
To update your mailing address, fill out the change of address section on the back of the first page of your statement.
Because Geisinger is a teaching facility, the physician name appearing on your statement is the supervising physician. This name may differ from the actual physician you saw.
The balance on your statement reflects all charges, less any payment received from your insurance company. Geisinger requests payment in full for the balance shown within 10 days of receiving your statement. You can make payment arrangements by calling the Patient Service Call Center at 800-640-4206.
Your medical record number appears on both the return portion and the receipt portion of the statement. This is your unique patient identifying number.
"Provider-based" or "hospital-based outpatient" refers to the billing process for services rendered in a hospital outpatient clinic or location. This is the national model of practice for large, integrated delivery systems involved in patient care.
Under this model, you may receive 2 charges on your combined bill for services provided in a clinic — 1 for the facility or hospital charge, and 1 for the professional or physician fee.
Since Geisinger employs many physicians, we follow this billing process for outpatient care at our hospitals. It ensures more appropriate payment for services provided by hospital staff and physicians, and it distinguishes facilities that function as hospital departments from those that are freestanding.
Depending on your insurance coverage, you may pay more for certain outpatient services and procedures at our provider-based/hospital outpatient locations than at one of our other sites. Review your insurance benefits or contact your insurance provider to find out what your policy covers and what out-of-pocket expenses you may incur.
Note: Some lab tests drawn at a freestanding clinic may be sent to a hospital or other facility for processing and will show as a "hospital outpatient lab charge."
Depending on your specific insurance benefits, you may have added out-of-pocket expenses under the provider-based model.
