FAQs

What are the risk factors for gallbladder cancer?

Certain medical conditions, genetics and lifestyle factors can increase your risk of developing gallbladder cancer, including:

  • Chronic gallbladder conditions: A history of gallstones, porcelain gallbladder or gallbladder polyps and cysts can increase your risk.
  • Age and gender: Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 65 and 75. Women are more likely to develop gallbladder cancer than men.
  • Family history and race: Your risk increases if a family member has had the disease. It’s also more common in people of Native American or Mexican descent.
  • Lifestyle and environment: Tobacco use and obesity are significant risk factors. Exposure to certain industrial chemicals can also increase your chances of developing the disease.

What are the symptoms of gallbladder cancer?

Gallbladder cancer is often difficult to detect in its early stages because it may not cause symptoms, or signs may mimic common digestive issues. When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Abdominal pain or lumps
  • Bloating, especially after eating
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Persistent fever
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Itchy skin
  • Greasy or light-colored stools

Having these symptoms does not mean you have gallbladder cancer. But, if you experience persistent digestive discomfort or jaundice, talk to your doctor.

How is gallbladder cancer diagnosed?

We use definitive technology to identify gallbladder cancer and determine its stage. Diagnostic tests include:

  • Blood tests: These tests can rule out any gallbladder conditions that may be unrelated to cancer, such as gallstones or cysts.
  • Biopsy: During a biopsy, your doctor may remove a small tissue sample to test for cancerous cells.
  • Imaging tests: We use high-definition ultrasound, CT and MRI scans to create detailed images of the gallbladder and biliary tract.
