FAQs

Can I take steps to prevent gynecologic cancer?

While you can’t prevent every type of cancer, there are proven ways to lower your risk and detect issues early:

  • Stay current on screenings: Regular Pap smears are the most effective way to prevent cervical cancer by finding cell changes before they become cancerous.
  • Get the HPV vaccine: This vaccine protects against the types of human papillomavirus that cause most cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers.
  • Know your family history: Genetic testing and counseling can help identify inherited risks for ovarian and uterine cancers, allowing for a proactive screening plan.
  • Listen to your body: Promptly report symptoms like irregular bleeding, pelvic pain or persistent bloating to your doctor.

What are the symptoms of gynecologic cancer?

Symptoms can be subtle and vary by cancer type, but schedule an appointment if you have:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding: This includes any bleeding after menopause or unusually heavy or irregular bleeding between your periods.
  • Persistent pelvic or back pain: Ongoing pressure or pain in the pelvic area that does not go away with rest or lifestyle changes.
  • Abdominal changes: Frequent bloating, feeling full too quickly when eating or changes in bowel and bladder habits.
  • Skin changes: Noticeable changes in color, persistent itching or the presence of sores or lumps in the vulvar area.

How is gynecologic cancer diagnosed?

Our team uses a combination of advanced physical exams and technology to make a diagnosis:

  • Pelvic exams and Pap smears: These routine checks are the first step in identifying abnormalities in the reproductive organs and cervix.
  • Advanced imaging: We use transvaginal ultrasound, MRI and CT scans to provide a clear view of the ovaries, uterus and surrounding tissue.
  • Biopsy and colposcopy: If we find an abnormality, we remove a small tissue sample to check for cancer cells under a microscope.
  • Blood tests: Specific markers, such as the CA-125 test, can provide additional information to help our specialists monitor or diagnose certain conditions.

What types of surgeries or procedures are used to treat gynecologic cancer?

Surgical procedures can include:

  • Radical cytoreductive (“debulking”) surgery for advanced gynecologic cancers
  • Hysterectomy (simple and radical)
  • Salpingo-oophorectomy
  • Minimally invasive surgery, including robotic surgery using the da Vinci® Surgery System
  • Sentinel lymph node mapping for endometrial, cervical and vulvar cancers
  • Pelvic, para-aortic and inguinal lymph node dissection
  • Cervical loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)
  • Cold knife conization
  • Pelvic exenteration
  • Bowel and urinary tract resection, diversion and reconstruction
  • Vaginectomy
