FAQs

How do I know if my headache is actually a migraine?

Migraines typically cause moderate to severe throbbing pain on 1 side of the head, often with nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Tension headaches, meanwhile, usually feel like constant pressure on both sides of the head but don’t typically come with nausea or sensitivity to light or sound.

Can bad posture or neck pain cause headaches?

Yes. Physical strain on the head and neck is a common headache trigger. Cervicogenic headaches originate from the neck and cause pain that radiates to the head. Posture changes and stretches can help. Your primary care provider can start you on treatment for your neck pain or refer you to physical therapy.

When should I talk to my provider about my headaches?

Many headache disorders, including migraine, can be effectively diagnosed and treated in primary care. Talk to your primary care provider if your headaches are frequent, severe or impact your daily life or if over-the-counter medications aren’t providing relief. Your primary care provider can evaluate your symptoms, establish a diagnosis, and develop an individualized treatment plan that may include lifestyle modifications, acute treatments, preventive medications, or additional testing when needed.

If your headaches become more complex, or require specialized evaluation or treatment, your primary care provider may recommend a referral to a neurologist or headache specialist.
