With more than 200 providers across 30+ locations in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, you won't have to travel far for appointments. Many locations share a building with specialists, lab, radiology and pharmacy services, so more of your care happens in one place. And if you have a health question, call us first. It could save you an unnecessary trip to the ER.

FAQs

What does a primary care physician do?

A primary care provider (PCP) manages most of your health concerns. PCPs do checkups and screenings and treat common illnesses and injuries.

There are 4 types of PCPs:

  • Pediatricians care for children from newborns through young adults (up to age 18).
  • Family doctors provide care for children and adults.
  • Internal medicine doctors care for adults and can help manage chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease.
  • Advanced practitioners, such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners, work closely with your doctor to diagnose, treat and manage your care.

Who’s on the primary care team?

Depending on your needs, your team may consist of some or all of the following:

  • Doctors
  • Physician assistants/nurse practitioners
  • Nurses/medical assistants
  • Pharmacists
  • Nurse health managers
  • Health coaches
  • Community health assistants
  • Residents and fellows

What age patients do you see?

Patients of all ages are welcome. We’re here to help you find the right PCP, including those who specialize in senior health or women’s health. You can choose from internal medicine and family medicine if you are an adult, and children can see pediatricians or family medicine doctors.

Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?

Although our primary care clinics don’t take walk-in appointments, we do offer same- or next-day appointments when possible. We also offer evening and Saturday hours. For more immediate care or walk-in care, you can visit one of our urgent care locations.

What insurances do you accept?

Geisinger PCPs accept most health coverage. View a list of participating insurances, or call the Patient Service Call Center at 800-640-4206 for more information.

How do I change doctors?

Whether you’re looking for a new PCP or would like to switch from your current Geisinger provider, changing doctors is easy. Find a primary care provider near you or request an appointment by calling 800-275-6401. Geisinger patients can also book an appointment through MyChart.
