FAQs

What are some common conditions that can cause hand or wrist pain?

Pain in your hands and wrists can have many causes, including injury and trauma or chronic conditions like arthritis. We also see overuse issues, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis. Common hand and wrist conditions include:

  • Arthritis and tendinitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Congenital hand and wrist conditions
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Dislocations
  • Dupuytren contracture
  • Ganglion cysts and masses
  • Inflammatory arthritis
  • Sports injuries
  • Sprains
  • Tendon injuries
  • Trigger and mallet finger
  • Trauma and fractures

How do doctors diagnose hand and wrist pain?

Our hand and wrist doctors may use one of the following tests to diagnose your pain:

  • Physical exam: Your doctor will look at and feel your hand and wrist to identify issues in your bones or joints. They may ask you to hold, lift or grasp objects to see how your hand and wrist are functioning.
  • X-ray: If your doctor thinks your pain is coming from your bones, your doctor may recommend an X-ray to take a detailed image of your hand and wrist.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Sometimes, an X-ray doesn’t provide enough information to make a diagnosis of your hand and wrist pain. In that case, your doctor may recommend an MRI. An MRI uses powerful magnets to take an image of the inside of your hand and wrist.

How do you treat hand and wrist pain?

There are many treatments for hand and wrist pain; finding the right one depends on what’s causing your pain. Your treatment may involve non-surgical options like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or steroid injections, which reduce pain and swelling. Your doctor might also recommend a wrist brace, splint or physical therapy.

If your condition needs surgery, our team is skilled in options including minimally invasive nerve decompression, tendon and ligament repair, as well as specialized surgery, like open reduction and internal fixation to repair wrist and hand fractures.
