Why choose Geisinger for physical therapy?

Through physical therapy exercises, you can have reduced pain and improved physical function — and even prevent injury. Our physical therapists work with you on getting back to walking, climbing stairs and other everyday physical activities.

Whatever your long-term goals are, we’ll collaborate with your doctor to create a treatment plan to meet them. That might include intensive exercises that require your therapist's help, exercises you can do at home or both.

If you're in the hospital, our physical therapists are here 7 days a week. We may start therapy the same day as your surgery so you can get a head start on healing.

You'll find our specialists in every Geisinger hospital and at outpatient clinics in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, so you get care close to home. It just takes a doctor’s referral to schedule an appointment.

FAQs

What's physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a specialty service that uses exercises to help you relieve pain, regain or improve physical function and prevent future injury. Some therapy involves intensive exercises that need your therapist's help, and some you can do at home. The goal is to get you back to everyday activities like walking and climbing stairs.

What does physical therapy treat?

Physical therapy can help people with conditions and injuries including:

  • ACL injuries and reconstruction
  • Ankle sprains and instability
  • Balance disorders and fall risk
  • Fracture rehabilitation
  • Low back pain
  • Lymphedema
  • Meniscus tears
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Neck pain (cervical disorders)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Pediatric rehabilitation
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Stroke (CVA)
  • Total hip replacement recovery
  • Total knee replacement recovery
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Vestibular disorders and dizziness

Physical therapy sometimes involves intensive exercises that require your therapist’s help — as well as exercises you can do in the comfort of your own home. Our goal is to help you get back to doing the everyday physical activities of life.

What happens at a physical therapy appointment?

Before you see a physical therapist, you’ll need a referral from your healthcare provider.

At your first appointment, your therapist will interview you, perform tests and make sure they understand your personal goals. They’ll teach you more about your condition and set clear targets and expectations for your recovery plan. Your therapist works with your referring medical professional to create a specialized treatment plan to reach your long-term objectives.
