Why choose Geisinger for robotic surgery?

Robotic-assisted surgery is just like any other surgery. It’s still performed by your surgeon. Your care and comfort come first. The only difference? Innovative technology. Robotics amplifies your surgeon’s precision, control and visibility.

Your surgeons and other operating room (OR) professionals are among the most experienced robotic surgery teams in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. They’ve done intensive training across specialties including colorectal, orthopedic, urologic, thoracic and oncologic surgery, bringing a depth of expertise before, during and after your surgery.

And because robotic-assisted procedures are minimally invasive, most patients have a smoother, faster recovery. Meaning you’ll spend less time in the hospital so you can get back to what you love.

Types of robotic surgery

Aquablation

Aquablation® is a robotic surgical arm that your surgeon uses to perform a minimally invasive procedure to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (also called enlarged prostate), and it's available right here at Geisinger. Your surgeon uses a precise stream of water to remove damaged prostate tissue.

da Vinci Surgical System

The da Vinci® Surgical System has several arms, including a camera arm and surgical arms, that a surgeon controls during procedures. The surgeon works from a console in the operating room that features a high-definition 3D display.

The much smaller robotic “hands” help surgeons perform procedures through tiny incisions that human hands simply can’t make. Your surgical team uses da Vinci across a range of specialties including:

  • General surgeries
  • Colorectal surgeries
  • Thoracic surgeries
  • Surgical oncology procedures
  • OB-GYN procedures
  • Urology surgeries

Mako robotic arm-assisted surgery

With Mako®, you get precision right from the beginning. The robotic arm assists your surgeon in performing minimally invasive joint replacement surgery for total hip replacement, total knee replacement or partial knee replacement. Here’s how it works.

  • Scan: A CT scan maps out your specific anatomy, including bone structure, joint alignment and the surrounding tissue.
  • Plan: Your team uses the scan to build a 3D model of your joint and create a personalized surgical plan.
  • Mako can: Your surgeon guides the Mako robotic arm to cut less and protect your healthy tissue.

FAQs

What’s robotic surgery?

During robotic surgery, your surgeon uses a computer to control and guide robotic arms outfitted with small instruments. The camera and special surgical tools give your surgeon a higher degree of precision than ever before.

What are some benefits of robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery gives your surgeon a wider range of motion than the human hand offers. Some benefits include:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less scarring
  • Less pain and discomfort
  • Quicker recovery
  • Protection of the surrounding healthy tissue
  • The ability to treat hard-to-reach areas
