FAQs

What’s menopause?

Menopause is a natural part of aging. It marks the time in your life when you stop menstruating, as well as the point when you can no longer have a baby naturally. By definition, you’re in menopause when you haven’t gotten your period in 12 months and have reduced reproductive hormones.

The time leading up to menopause is called perimenopause, and the period afterward is post-menopause. You will notice changes in your body during all 3 phases. Geisinger gynecologic providers use a team approach to help improve your physical and mental well-being, from perimenopause through post-menopause.

What are perimenopause and menopause symptoms?

Perimenopause and menopause cause a range of symptoms that can last for several years. You won’t necessarily have all of them, though. Common symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes or night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Trouble focusing or remembering things
  • Weight gain
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Vaginal dryness

When does menopause start?

Menopause usually occurs between your mid-40s and mid-50s. The average age is 51. As you get older, your periods may become irregular, but it’s only when they’ve stopped for 1 year that you will have reached menopause.

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone therapy (HT) is a medical treatment that helps to maintain hormone levels. It can treat common symptoms of menopause, like hot flashes, mood swings and vaginal dryness, and it may improve your sleep and sex drive. Doctors may also recommend HT to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis.

There are 2 main types of HT: systemic hormone therapy that works throughout the body and low-dose vaginal cream, tablets and rings that work locally and have minimal systemic absorption outside of the reproductive system.
