First in Mako robotic joint replacement surgery – only at Geisinger

New adventures deserve new joints.

Why let chronic joint pain consume your daily life? Get back to doing the things you enjoy most — with our surgeons’ help.

Their tool of choice: Mako, an innovative solution for chronic knee and hip pain. Mako is a robotic arm that assists in joint replacement surgery for:

  • Total hip replacement
  • Total knee replacement
  • Partial knee replacement

Why Geisinger?

True skill comes only with experience. Geisinger’s Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine introduced Mako to northeastern and central Pennsylvania. So, our surgeons have had years to perfect their technique. That means you can be confident in your choice for precision hip or knee replacement.

And because we offer more robots than any other provider, you’ll enjoy optimal accessibility and convenience, too. You can have your joint replacement surgery at any of these locations, all of which offer Mako:

  • Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre
  • Geisinger Community Medical Center (Scranton)
  • Geisinger Medical Center (Danville)
  • Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital
  • Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital
  • Geisinger Healthplex State College (Port Matilda)

The upshot: superior outcomes and a smoother recovery journey for you. Trust Geisinger for your Mako robotic surgery, and see the difference that our surgeons’ innovation and expertise can make in your journey to pain-free movement.

The Mako difference

All joints are not created equal. Using Mako’s advanced technology, we can plan for better outcomes compared to manual joint replacement surgery. A minimally invasive approach using smaller incisions means:

  • Less pain
  • Quicker recovery time
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Longer-lasting joints, custom-built for your unique body
  • More healthy tissue, bone and ligaments preserved

Embrace life without limits — don't let persistent joint discomfort determine how you enjoy your time with those you love.

How Mako works

Superior precision, right from the beginning. A Geisinger orthopaedic surgeon will perform your surgery using Mako’s SmartRobotics™ System. Here’s how it works:

  • Scan. It all starts with a CT scan so your surgeon can learn your specific anatomy. We’ll evaluate your bone structure, disease severity, joint alignment and even the surrounding bone and tissue.
  • Plan. The CT scan is used to create a 3D virtual model of your joint. Your surgeon makes a personalized surgical plan based on your unique anatomy.
  • Mako can. During surgery, your surgeon guides Mako's robotic arm, which uses AccuStop™ haptic technology, so they can cut less and protect your healthy bone tissue.
