Extra Help: Get help paying for prescription drugs

Extra Help is a financial assistance program available for prescription costs, premiums, deductibles and coinsurance of Medicare prescription drug coverage. It’s administered by the Social Security Administration and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

However, if you don't qualify for Social Security Extra Help, your state may have programs that can help with prescription costs. You can also re-apply for Extra Help at any time if your income and resources change.

You may qualify for Extra Help

If you have limited financial resources and income, you may be eligible for Extra Help from Medicare. The program can help pay for costs related to a Medicare prescription drug plan, including monthly premiums, annual deductibles and prescription copays. To see if you qualify:

If you qualify for Extra Help, your premium may vary. The premium covers both medical services and prescription drug coverage. These amounts don't include any Medicare Part B premium you may have to pay.

You must continue to pay your Medicare Part B premium if it's not paid for under Medicaid or by another third party. To see what your premium would be, first find your plan and then the county you live in.

PACE or PACENET programs

Pennsylvania's prescription assistance programs for people age 65 and older, PACE and PACENET, offer low-cost prescription medication to qualified residents. To see if you're eligible, call 800-225-7223.

SSBCI: See if you’re eligible for more benefits

Some Geisinger Gold Secure Rx (HMO D-SNP) members may qualify for Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill (SSBCI).

You’re eligible if you have certain chronic conditions and meet requirements. Most existing members should already be enrolled. Learn more and get the application for your provider with the SSBCI Provider Attestation Form.

Common questions about D-SNP

What does D-SNP mean?

D-SNP stands for Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan. A dual eligible special needs plan is a type of Medicare Advantage plan designed for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.

What is a D-SNP Medicare plan?

A D-SNP Medicare Advantage plan is tailored to people who are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid programs. These plans integrate medical, hospital and prescription drug coverage while aligning with Medicaid to help lower out-of-pocket expenses. When you review D-SNP plans, check how the plan supports care coordination, transportation, dental, vision and other supplemental benefits.

What qualifies me for a D-SNP plan?

To qualify for a D-SNP plan, you must be enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid. In Pennsylvania, that means meeting eligibility categories defined by the state. If you meet those requirements, you may enroll in D-SNP plans such as Geisinger Gold Medicare Advantage Secure Rx (HMO D-SNP).

How does a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan differ from other Medicare options?

A Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan differs from Original Medicare and standard Medicare Advantage plans by coordinating Medicare and Medicaid benefits for those who qualify for both. Compared with other Medicare options, D-SNP plans focus on connecting members to community resources and managing complex care.
