Eligible for or enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid?

You may qualify for a Geisinger Gold Medicare Advantage Secure Rx (HMO D-SNP) plan.

What's the right plan for me? HMO vs. PPO

  • Health maintenance organization (HMO) plans usually require you to use doctors and hospitals within the plan's network and get referrals to see specialists.
  • Preferred provider organization (PPO) plans offer more flexibility — you can see providers outside the network*, usually at a higher cost — and generally do not require referrals for specialists.

Geisinger Gold offers both. You can filter between HMO and PPO plans.

Common questions when you’re choosing a Medicare plan

For personalized plan help, call us at 800-482-8163 (TTY: 711). Our team is here to help you learn more about Medicare Advantage plans in Pennsylvania.

How can I choose the best Medicare Advantage plan for me?

Here are the steps to take:

  • Start by listing the doctors and medications you use, then check which plans include them in-network and in their formulary.
  • Compare monthly premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums to understand your potential costs.
  • Consider whether you want an HMO or PPO based on how much flexibility you need.
  • Review any extra benefits that matter to you, such as dental, vision or fitness programs.
  • Look at star ratings for quality and member satisfaction.

A Geisinger Gold Medicare advisor can help you compare options based on your situation.

Why would I choose HMO health insurance?

When comparing HMO vs. PPO plans, you should know that an HMO health plan typically offers a lower cost for healthcare, but your providers are more limited. In an HMO, your primary care provider — your regular doctor — coordinates your care and provides referrals to see specialists in the network. HMOs are budget-friendly if you use providers in the designated network. Costs for out-of-network providers are higher. If your preferred doctors and providers are in the network, and cost is your biggest concern, an HMO might be right for you. Check the Geisinger Health Plan provider network, one of broadest in Pennsylvania. You’re not limited to Geisinger providers and facilities.

Why would I choose PPO insurance?

When comparing HMO vs. PPO plans, you should know that with a PPO, you usually pay higher monthly premiums than with an HMO, but you have access to more providers and without referrals. If you need to see a specialist, you don’t need to see your primary care provider — your regular doctor — for a referral first. If you see an out-of-network provider, your costs don’t increase significantly. If you have multiple complex conditions, prefer to see a specialist without referral delays, travel frequently or want a broader selection of providers, a PPO might be right for you. Check the Geisinger Health Plan provider network, one of broadest in Pennsylvania. You’re not limited to Geisinger providers and facilities.
