Common questions

What is FEHB?

FEHB is an acronym for Federal Employee Health Benefits. Geisinger Health Plan offers 2 health plans, basic and standard — both approved by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) — for employees of the federal government.

We also offer a plan for Medicare-eligible members.

What is FEHB open season?

Open season is the set time period federal employees can choose their health benefits for the year.

When is FEHB open season?

Federal employees must choose their benefits between Nov. 9 and Dec. 14, 2026, for coverage starting Jan. 1, 2027.

Effective date: FEHB enrollment changes for most employees generally become effective on the first day of the first full pay period beginning on or after Jan. 1, which is expected to be Jan. 10, 2027. Members should confirm final dates, eligibility, enrollment timing and coverage details in official FEHB and plan materials.

Can I change my FEHB plan outside of open season?

Yes, but only if you have a qualifying life event (QLE). You must submit your change within 60 days of that event occurring. Common QLEs are:

  • Getting married, divorcing or legally separating
  • Having a baby, adopting a child or getting a new foster child
  • Death of a spouse or a covered family member
  • Moving outside your current health plan’s service area
  • Losing other health insurance coverage

Talk to a customer service representative for more information or learn more about QLEs from OPM.
