Step-by-step answers to common questions

Enrolling in Medicare and Medicare Advantage doesn't have to be confusing. The guidance below simplifies enrollment and the steps to take afterward.

Make the most of enrollment periods

Annual and Open Enrollment Periods

Enroll in Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans during 2 primary periods:

  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): Oct. 15 – Dec. 7
You can only switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan during AEP.
  • Open Enrollment Period (OEP): Jan. 1 – March 31
During OEP, you may switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

If you have a qualifying event, such as moving out of your plan's coverage area, you can enroll during a Special Enrollment Period outside of AEP and OEP.

Mail the application

If you don't have the pre-printed envelope provided, mail your application to:

Geisinger Gold
Attn. Enrollment 32-29
P.O. Box 900
Danville, PA 17821-9979

Choose an emergency contact

Select one trusted person, like your spouse, an adult child, or a friend, as your emergency contact. The application allows only one contact and phone number.

Receive your Geisinger Gold insurance card

After Medicare and Geisinger Gold confirm your eligibility, expect your insurance card within 10 days. View your card in your member portal as soon as it becomes available.

Manage current insurance

Do not cancel any existing insurance until you verify acceptance into your new plan.

  • Some insurers may require written confirmation of this transition.
  • Medicare needs time to verify your application. Wait for your confirmation letter to avoid gaps in insurance coverage.

Handle billing and payments

Your first Geisinger Gold bill depends on the billing cycle and Medicare's approval. If your premiums aren't electronically deducted, your initial bill may cover 2 months to align with the billing cycle. Make sure your payment process is smooth by:

  • Contacting customer care to arrange premium deductions from your checking, savings or credit card accounts
  • Managing or updating your payment method online
