Frequently asked questions

Why should I become a member?

Your membership helps Geisinger EMS staff, vehicles and equipment provide around-the-clock protection for you and your family in an emergency. And your EMS membership can save you hundreds of dollars, too!
Do I need a subscription if I have health insurance?

Yes. Most insurance companies do not pay 100% of total ambulance charges. Your Geisinger EMS membership covers copays and 50% of your deductible.
How is Geisinger EMS reimbursed if I’m transported to the hospital?

If you need ambulance services, Geisinger EMS will submit a bill to your insurance company. Any insurance payments are then applied to your balance. Once insurance benefits are exhausted, we write off any remaining balance. Geisinger EMS members do not have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses.
What should I do if my insurance company sends me a check for payment of services provided by Geisinger EMS?

If you receive payment for services completed by Geisinger EMS, please forward it directly to us. If we don’t receive payment, we have the right to cancel your membership and any outstanding balances will be due immediately.
Who is covered by a family membership?

Anyone who resides in your household who is listed on your application.
What is not covered by Geisinger EMS membership?

  • Alternative non-emergency transportation methods, such as wheelchair van transports (although Geisinger EMS members get a 20% discount on medical transports)
  • Certain non-emergency ambulance transports, which may be denied or deemed outside the limits of your insurance coverage
  • Transports that do not meet medical necessity criteria
  • Charges related to excessive mileage or other non-covered charges for transports, which are based solely on patient and/or physician preference
What if I need to update my information?

No problem! Please notify us of any changes or updates, such as:

  • Changes in address or phone number
  • Adding or removing a member of your household
  • Changes in insurance

To update your information, contact us at GEMS@geisinger.edu or 800-367-0512, ext. 2.
