Ultrasound

Ultrasound is an imaging exam that uses high-frequency sound waves to help doctors see inside the body. Ultrasounds are used to examine anything from heart valves to a moving baby. It is painless, safe and uses no radiation.

In addition to evaluating a fetus, our physicians use ultrasound to examine organ systems in the body, including the liver, spleen, gallbladder, kidneys, uterus, ovaries, breasts and vascular system.

What you should know about ultrasound

  • The sonographer will place warm gel on your body, place a transducer on that area, and obtain images for the radiologist to evaluate.
  • Ultrasound provides images of soft tissue, which does not display well on traditional X-rays.
  • Doppler ultrasound can be used to measure the direction and speed of blood flow.
