Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is a technology allowing physicians to see real-time motion inside the body to evaluate the function of the skeletal, digestive, urinary, respiratory and reproductive systems. Our radiology specialists use fluoroscopy to help physicians diagnose disease or to guide physicians during certain types of procedures.

As X-rays are passed through the body, the images are transmitted to a monitor, enabling physicians to view motion as it occurs (whether motion of a body part, an instrument or contrast dye).

What you should know about fluoroscopy

  • Fluoroscopy is used in a wide range of procedures, including:
    • Tests to view the gastrointestinal tract like barium X-rays and enemas
    • Procedures in which instruments must be inserted and manipulated, such as moving catheters through the urinary tract, blood vessels and bile ducts
    • Placement of devices like stents to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels
    • Angiograms, which are used to view blood vessels and organs
    • Orthopaedic surgeries in which joint replacement guidance is needed
  • For some types of tests, a contrast medium such as iodine or barium is introduced into the body to provide greater detail on the fluoroscopy images.
