Ruth Trinidad, BRCA2 positive
Ruth had prophylactic breast surgery and reconstruction after a MyCode genetic result revealed she was at increased risk for breast and ovarian cancer.
"I feel like I have my life back."
Ruth Trinidad was eager to have surgery to remove excess skin after successfully losing weight. Three weeks before that procedure her plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Christian Kauffman called to tell her she was BRCA2 positive. She had the gene that causes breast cancer.
It had been three years since Ruth lost her mom to ovarian cancer. She didn’t want to suffer the same fate as her mother and decided to have a bilateral mastectomy to remove both of her breasts. Since she delayed her skin removal surgery Dr. Kauffman used her extra skin to naturally reconstruct her breasts.
“I feel like I have my life back,” Ruth said after making the decision to try and prevent breast cancer. She spends her days on the farm with her horses and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
