What is a health care quality unit (HCQU)?
HCQUs support the state intellectual disability community system. They build capacity and competency to meet the physical and behavioral healthcare needs of Pennsylvanians with intellectual and developmental disability/autism (IDA).
The Central PA HCQU provides IDA training and resources to individuals to enhance their health and wellness.
The HCQU is part of Geisinger, under the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Office of Developmental Programs.
HCQU is the responsible entity to county IDA programs for the overall health status of individuals enrolled in their services.
Central PA HCQU serves Blair, Centre, Clinton, Columbia, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lycoming, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland Schuylkill, Snyder and Union counties.

We work with:

What we do:
- Offer no-cost education and training on healthcare topics (virtual, in-person and online)
- Support teams addressing complex medical issues
- Provide pertinent healthcare materials
- Provide nursing reviews to assist with physical and behavioral health concerns
- Review incident data to identify and reduce healthcare risks
- Participate in community outreach
- Participate in county risk management, quality assurance and human rights committees
- Identify and share community resources
- Develop and distribute a HCQU Healthy Outcomes newsletter
What we don’t do:
- Offer direct or primary healthcare
- Perform licensing or regulatory activities
- Manage crises
- Diagnose or prescribe medications or treatment
- Perform direct consultations
