What you should know

Insurance information
You can share or update your health insurance information with Geisinger in any of the following ways:

  • Option 1: MyGeisinger, MyGeisinger users log into your account and select the ‘Send A Message’ page and use the 'Customer Service Message' option.
  • Option 2: By phone, 866-521-5179
  • Option 3: In person, update your insurance at any Geisinger hospital or clinic.

What will happen if I don't have insurance?
You may be asked to pre-pay for services. If pre-payment is not requested prior to services rendered or, the charges for a service are more than the pre-payment amount, you will receive a bill shortly after the services are provided requesting payment for the balance due. If you need assistance, contact a counselor for financial assistance, 570-214-4112.

Additionally, our financial counselors can help you determine if you are eligible for Medicaid or Health Insurance. To set up an appointment, call 855-849-1510.

How do I purchase health insurance?
You can purchase health insurance from the federal health insurance marketplace. Geisinger has certified application counselors trained in the health insurance marketplace, as well as on Pennsylvania’s Medical Assistance program. Our counselors can assist you in applying for and obtaining insurance prior to service. If you need assistance, call 855-849-1510 to speak with or to schedule a face-to-face appointment with a Geisinger Trusted Advisor. This service is offered free of charge.   

How can I find out if Geisinger participates with my insurance plan?
To determine if Geisinger is considered participating as an in-network provider with your insurance plan, you can validate this information any of the following ways:

  • Consult the provider directory given to you by your insurance company
  • Check your insurance company's website
  • Call your insurance company's customer service department,
  • Review our Participating Insurance Plans.

How do I know what will my insurance pay for?
You can contact your insurance company for information regarding benefit coverage prior to receiving care.

After you receive services, Geisinger will file insurance claims on your behalf. You are responsible for payment for any remaining balance after insurance. Note, some payments are due prior to or, at the time you receive care.

You will receive a bill for any remaining balances determined by your insurance provider. If you would like an estimate of your cost-sharing responsibilities you can click on the link to visit our MyEstimate® tools.

  • In person, to set up an in-person appointment with a financial counselor by calling 570-214-4112.

Do I need pre-certification or prior authorization from my primary care physician or my insurance company?
Your Geisinger doctor will decide which procedures, tests, and other consultations you may need. Many health plans require pre-certification prior to care being rendered. Some services may not be a covered benefit with some health insurance plans.

If you are unsure as to whether pre-certification is necessary, contact your insurance company’s customer service department. Geisinger will coordinate obtaining authorization with you and your insurance company, as your insurance company may request specific clinical information from the provider before they will authorize a service.

What if my insurance claim is denied?
Contact your insurance company for full and complete details regarding the denial. You may be able to appeal the denial. Your insurance company determines specific appeal processes and timelines. If you need additional information or assistance, contact our Patient Service Call Center at 800-640-4206.

If you have already contacted your insurance company, and they state they will be reprocessing your claim, obtain a reference number and contact our Patient Service Call Center at 800-640-4206 for further assistance.
