What does physical therapy treat?
Physical therapy is a specialty of physical medicine that uses exercises to help you relieve pain, regain or improve physical function and help prevent future injury. Physical therapy can help with conditions and injuries including:
- Amputation
- Arthritis and osteoarthritis (OA)
- Foot and ankle pain
- Fractures
- Hand and wrist pain
- Heart surgery
- Hip pain
- Joint pain
- Knee pain
- Neck and back pain
- Neurotrauma and traumatic brain injury
- Parkinson's disease
- Brain and spinal cord injuries
- Stroke
- Pediatric surgery
Physical therapy sometimes involves intensive exercises that require the therapist’s help — as well as exercises you can do in the comfort of your own home. Our goal is to help you get back to everyday movements such as walking, climbing stairs and other physical activities.

What happens at a physical therapy appointment?
Before you see a physical therapist, you’ll need a referral from your healthcare provider.
At your first appointment, your therapist will interview you, perform tests and work with you to understand your personal goals. Then they’ll teach you more about your condition and set clear goals and expectations for your recovery plan. Your therapist also collaborates with your referring medical professional to create a specialized treatment plan to help you reach your long-term goals.
