Hospice care services

Offering round-the-clock physical, emotional and spiritual support for patients, their caregivers and family members.

What is hospice care?

Hospice care is a specialized program for those with a life-limiting illness. Treatment focuses on quality of life and living each day to the fullest, with a special emphasis on pain and symptom management.
Hospice care can be provided at home — in a single-family home, apartment, assisted-living facility or nursing home — or in a “home away from home,” such as the Geisinger Hospice program located at Maria Hall

With a physician referral, hospice is an option for anyone with conditions including:

Our caring, specially trained team consists of nurses, therapists, social workers, a hospice medical director, spiritual counselors, trained volunteers and your physician to offer care and guidance to the whole family.

Our hospice team provides:
  • Pain and symptom management
  • Short-term inpatient care for pain and symptom management
  • Personal care assistance
  • Community resource planning
  • Grief and bereavement support
  • Volunteer services

Grief and bereavement support

We know hospice care affects the whole family. That’s why we offer grief and bereavement support for every family member.

We also offer memorial services, remembrance events and monthly grief support meetings to those who’ve lost a loved one.

Timing of hospice care

Hospice care should begin as a patient’s illness progresses to later stages, which could mean he or she only has months or weeks instead of years of life remaining. Hospice helps the patient and his or her family focus on quality of life. Our goal is to help the patient live each day to its fullest through pain and symptom management and emotional support.

The patient or the patient’s family members should speak to a doctor about a proper time to begin hospice care, as a physician referral is required. If needed, the staff at Geisinger Home Health & Hospice can speak with the patient’s doctor to help with obtaining a referral.
