Canine assisted (pet) therapy
Pet therapy has a long history at Geisinger. Our patients, their families and our staff always look forward to interacting with therapy dogs and benefiting from their furry friendliness. Whether they’re providing stress relief for our staff or comfort to our patients, volunteer handlers and their certified therapy dogs are always needed at Geisinger.
We offer 2 canine therapy programs at Geisinger. One primarily focuses on our patients and their families (Geisinger Pet Therapy) and the other on our staff (Paws to Reflect). Volunteer handlers and their dogs can participate in either or both programs, depending on your interest and the best fit for you and your dog.
- Geisinger Pet Therapy: Owners (handlers) of certified therapy dogs visit inpatient areas, outpatient clinics and hospital departments to bring joy, stress relief and companionship to patients, guests and employees.
- Paws to Reflect program: This pet therapy program focuses on supporting Geisinger employees. A Geisinger employee trained as a peer supporter accompanies the dog/handler team on their visits to provide an empathetic ear and referral to additional resources as appropriate. Email geisingerpaws@geisinger.edu for more information.
In addition to the application process and clearances for volunteer handlers, the following must be completed for all canines prior to service:
- Submit proof of pet therapy certification from a recognized AKC organization. (Must be pet therapy, not canine good citizen or any other certification.)
- Provide proof of certifying organization membership/insurance coverage annually.
- Submit veterinarian-documented health records annually.
- Participate in Geisinger Pet Therapy or Paws to Reflect program orientation.
- Attend 2 supervised behavioral screenings with an experienced Geisinger volunteer handler and be cleared to participate in service.
