Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU)

If your baby is born with medical challenges, you want to be sure they’re receiving the best care possible.

Geisinger’s hospital NICUs provide newborn babies with advanced, specialized neonatal care. These special nurseries are staffed 24/7 with neonatal specialists trained to meet the unique needs of even the most fragile infants. We’re here to:

  • Help you understand your baby’s medical and developmental needs
  • Act as a support system for you and your family
  • Provide resources throughout pregnancy and after your baby’s arrival
  • Prepare you to take care of your baby

What does NICU stand for?

The term NICU is short for neonatal intensive care unit, a department inside a hospital that cares for infants who are seriously or critically ill.

Our NICUs provide care for infants who:

  • Experience complications during pregnancy or birth
  • Have a birth defect or congenital condition
  • Have a critical illness or substance-related condition

Babies who come to the NICU typically need more care than a regular hospital nursery can provide.

What are the levels of NICU?

Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) help babies who need extra care. Geisinger hospitals offer three NICUs across northeast, central and south-central Pennsylvania:
