Why surgery at Geisinger?

Our hospitals and clinics are staffed with highly trained, experienced surgeons. From emergency to elective surgeries and minimally invasive to complex procedures, we're ready to take care of you. We offer:

Innovative treatments and specialized care

  • Advanced expertise: Many of our surgeons have completed advanced training in specific types of surgery. This precise level of care leads to improved accuracy and fewer complications.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: We use minimally invasive techniques, such as robotic surgery, whenever possible. This means smaller surgical incisions and shorter recovery times.
  • Leading-edge procedures: We offer advanced treatments right here in your backyard. Our urologists were the first in central and northeastern Pennsylvania to offer Aquablation® therapy for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia.
  • ProvenCare® system: Our ProvenCare approach uses the latest research and recommendations to achieve exceptional outcomes. We offer ProvenCare methods for many types of surgery, including lung cancer, bariatric and hip replacement surgery.
  • Transplants close to home: When you need a liver or kidney transplant, you don’t have to travel far. We offer transplant care in both Danville and Wilkes-Barre.

Nationally recognized programs

Surgical services

From complex surgical treatments to in-office procedures, our surgeons offer a variety of surgical specialties close to home. Recognized both regionally and nationally, our surgery team performs minimally invasive procedures, including robotic surgery, whenever possible and works with other specialists to provide you with the most advanced care available. Our surgeons are located throughout northeast and central Pennsylvania, so you don’t have to travel far to get the exceptional care you deserve:

Advanced surgical techniques

Our surgeons use the latest technology to perform a wide range of procedures, including:

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that doesn’t require traditional cuts or incisions. Using an endoscope — a long, flexible tube with a light and camera — surgeons can navigate through your body while watching a live video feed.

This technique is used to treat polyps, tumors or swallowing disorders and to collect tissue samples. You might hear it referred to as an upper endoscopy (when entering through your throat) or a colonoscopy (when entering through your anus).

Laparoscopic surgery

During this minimally invasive technique, your surgeon inserts a laparoscope — a long, narrow tube — into small incisions in your abdomen. This procedure is like an endoscopy but is used to treat conditions like appendicitis, gallstones and uterine fibroids as well as perform weight loss surgery.

Robotic surgery

Robotic surgery allows for advanced precision and a higher degree of accuracy. During these procedures, your surgeon will use a computer to control and guide robotic “arms” holding surgical tools. This technique can be used to treat certain types of cancer, hernias and pelvic floor disorders.

Robotic surgery typically means smaller incisions, less scarring and a faster recovery for you.

Urologic surgery

Treating a wide range of urological conditions, from prostate cancer to erectile dysfunction to incontinence, our urology specialists use minimally invasive surgery whenever possible. Our highly skilled urologists are leaders in robotic urological surgery and have performed more than 2,000 robotic urological procedures — more than any other healthcare provider in the region.

Eye surgery

Our skilled optometrists and ophthalmologists provide complete eye care from routine eye exams to eye surgery. Experienced in treating cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, blurry vision, eye floaters, diabetic retinopathy and all other eye conditions, our ophthalmologists provide the best care for your eyes, so you never miss a moment.

General surgery

Our general surgeons are trained and skilled in performing a full spectrum of surgical procedures including appendectomy, breast surgery, gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, skin and soft tissue surgeries, and more. They’ll be by your side throughout your care, from diagnosis to recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Can you perform minimally invasive surgery or robotic surgery?

Your surgeon will work with you to determine your best treatment plan, discussing minimally invasive surgery and robotic-assisted surgery if they are options that make sense for you. By performing these surgeries whenever possible, our surgeons ensure that patients experience quicker recovery time and often a shorter stay in the hospital.
Do you offer surgery near my home?

Our surgeons are located throughout northeast and central Pennsylvania, and we work to schedule your surgery at a location convenient to you. Depending on your surgery, you may have to travel to a location farther from your home to see the right surgeon. We will discuss all options with you to make your surgery date and location as convenient as possible.
Is surgery necessary?

We believe in performing surgery only when absolutely necessary. If you want to explore other treatment options, your doctor or surgeon will talk to you about what is available to you.
How do I prepare for surgery?

Before your procedure, your surgeon will work with you to make sure you’re prepared so you have the best possible outcomes. Good nutrition helps reduce infection and speed healing, and we may prescribe nutritional drinks to prepare you for surgery. We also recommend drinking at least six 8-ounce glasses of water every day and exercising, if you are able to. Taking care of yourself in these ways will help to prepare you for your surgery and recovery.
What can I expect my recovery to be like?

Depending on your procedure, you may be able to go home the same day. If you have a more intensive surgery, we will work with you and your loved ones to develop a treatment plan to get you back to daily life as soon as possible. This may include physical therapy, diet, exercise or a combination of all three.
