Frequently asked questions

Can you perform minimally invasive surgery or robotic surgery?

Your surgeon will work with you to determine your best treatment plan, discussing minimally invasive surgery and robotic-assisted surgery if they are options that make sense for you. By performing these surgeries whenever possible, our surgeons ensure that patients experience quicker recovery time and often a shorter stay in the hospital.
Do you offer surgery near my home?

Our surgeons are located throughout northeast and central Pennsylvania, and we work to schedule your surgery at a location convenient to you. Depending on your surgery, you may have to travel to a location farther from your home to see the right surgeon. We will discuss all options with you to make your surgery date and location as convenient as possible.
Is surgery necessary?

We believe in performing surgery only when absolutely necessary. If you want to explore other treatment options, your doctor or surgeon will talk to you about what is available to you.
How do I prepare for surgery?

Before your procedure, your surgeon will work with you to make sure you’re prepared so you have the best possible outcomes. Good nutrition helps reduce infection and speed healing, and we may prescribe nutritional drinks to prepare you for surgery. We also recommend drinking at least six 8-ounce glasses of water every day and exercising, if you are able to. Taking care of yourself in these ways will help to prepare you for your surgery and recovery.
What can I expect my recovery to be like?

Depending on your procedure, you may be able to go home the same day. If you have a more intensive surgery, we will work with you and your loved ones to develop a treatment plan to get you back to daily life as soon as possible. This may include physical therapy, diet, exercise or a combination of all three.

Surgery at Geisinger

Our hospitals and locations are staffed with knowledgeable and skilled surgeons. From emergency to elective surgeries and minimally invasive to complex procedures, we're here to take care of you. We offer:

  • Specialized care: Many of our surgeons have completed advanced training (called fellowships) in specific types of surgery. This precise level of care leads to improved accuracy and fewer complications.
  • Safe, effective surgical care: Our ProvenCare® approach uses the latest research and recommendations to achieve exceptional outcomes. We offer ProvenCare methods for many types of surgery, including lung cancer, bariatric and hip replacement surgery.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: We use minimally invasive techniques, such as robotic surgery, whenever possible. This type of surgery offers a higher degree of precision and less disruption to healthy tissue compared to other surgical methods. This means smaller surgical incisions, shorter recovery and faster return to your daily activities.
