Cardiac care and heart surgery

How we’ll handle your heart care

The moment you walk in the door of Geisinger Medical Center’s beautiful 308,000-square-foot Hospital for Advanced Medicine, you know you're in a place that takes heart care very seriously. The hospital offers state-of-the-art technology for diagnostic, inpatient and outpatient cardiac care. Each room in our dedicated cardiac unit is private and has 24/7 monitoring by our unique eICU.

Our heart surgeons treat a variety of heart conditions that affect the heart valves and arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle, including.

  • Heart valve disease
  • Blocked or damaged arteries
  • Coronary artery disease (atherosclerosis)

Some of the procedures our heart surgeons perform include:

  • Heart valve replacement and repair
  • Heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass surgery)
  • Single bypass (when one artery is blocked)
  • Double bypass (when two arteries are blocked)
  • Triple bypass (when three arteries are blocked)
  • Quadruple bypass (when four arteries are blocked)

Heart surgery can prevent heart failure, heart attack or other cardiac issues.

Our heart surgery program provides you with top-quality care from some of the best surgeons in the field. If you work for a participating employer, they cover all medical services, your travel and lodging for qualifying procedures.

While most patients are not responsible for any copays or coinsurance, some may be responsible for certain costs. Discuss your benefit structure with your employer and health insurance provider to understand your costs.

Why choose Geisinger for your heart care?

As a member of the Employers Centers of Excellence Network (ECEN), we have been specifically chosen to provide heart care to employees of Fortune 100 companies from across the U.S. As an ECEN member, we’ve been recognized as a national leader in the healthcare services we provide. We’re also the only designated ECEN hospital that is designated in four specialty areas for select joint replacement, heart, spine and bariatric surgeries.

Patients of our cardiac surgery program receive all the medical care they need in one trip. This includes any pre-surgery testing such as an echocardiogram, chest X-ray, electrocardiogram and routine lab tests; your procedure; and post-surgery care.

We treat a high number of patients with heart disease and have more heart subspecialists than any other program in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. Our team of experienced specialists will provide you with the best heart care, including the education you need to stay healthy and active. You’ll also have the one-on-one time you need to ask questions and address your concerns with your healthcare team.

By providing a high standard of care, we’ve reduced unnecessary surgeries when possible. This means you’ll get the care that’s right for you — and get back on your feet faster.

Additionally, our nurse navigators are available so that you can get the care you need without having to worry about the finer details. Your nurse navigator will help coordinate your appointments and testing here at Geisinger, ensuring you meet the program requirements along the way.

Health Design Plus will help coordinate your travel and stay.
