Geisinger becomes the first member of Risant Health

SCRANTON -- The REACH-HEI Pathways Programs at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine will present a fun, science-filled day created specifically for girls in grades 7 and 8 to gain visibility and engagement with women in the fields of medicine, healthcare, public health and the sciences. As “Girls in Sciences,” participants will rotate through learning stations centered around topics like environmental science, sonography, DNA, microbiology, nursing and more.

Maureen Murtha, executive director of the REACH-HEI Pathways Programs, likes to cite a quote attributed to Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children’s Defense Fund. “You can’t become what you don’t see,” Ms. Murtha said. “This day is dedicated to showing girls what being a woman in science looks like. We’ll have women presenting as medical students, healthcare professionals, and higher education representatives, hosting the science stations and interacting with participants – and they’ll be ready to discuss what interested them in science and how they pursued their dreams. Best of all, the hands-on activities are fun and sure to ignite the children’s curiosity.”

The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 and is hosted by REACH HEI Pathway Programs at GCSOM and Geisinger Commonwealth’s American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) chapter.
