Geisinger becomes the first member of Risant Health

DANVILLE, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) selected Geisinger Health Plan (GHP) as one of six managed care organizations in Pennsylvania to proceed with negotiations to offer health services through HealthChoices, Pennsylvania’s Medical Assistance program.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to continue working with DHS and the HealthChoices program,” said Steve Youso, chief executive officer at GHP. “Our managed Medicaid plan, GHP Family, helps to ensure that Pennsylvanians have access to quality care, so we’re happy to partner again with DHS and the HealthChoices program.”

According to a statement released by DHS, the focus of Pennsylvania’s Medicaid system is shifting from quantity of care to quality of care. Agreements will require managed care organizations to now focus on quality care that improves patient health rather than just providing services for a fee.

“We currently serve more than 179,000 Medicaid members,” said Dave Evans, vice president of state government programs at GHP, “and we focus on every member to manage and provide access to the quality care they need and deserve.”

GHP will continue to offer HealthChoices coverage to the program’s Northeast Zone and has been newly selected to offer coverage in the Lehigh/Capital Zone.

The Northeast Zone covers 22 counties: Bradford, Carbon, Centre, Clinton, Columbia, Juniata, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, Mifflin, Monroe, Montour, Northumberland, Pike, Schuylkill, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, Wayne and Wyoming. The Lehigh/Capital zone includes 13 additional counties: Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Northampton, Perry and York.  Eligible individuals in these areas will be able to select GHP Family for their HealthChoices coverage.

DHS will be finalizing contracts with the selected managed care organizations, to be effective June 2017.
