18 employees at Slocomb Windows and Doors receive transportation assistance

DANVILLE, PA – Shock and gratitude filled the faces of 18 Slocomb Windows and Doors employees as Geisinger Health Plan’s (GHP) sales department surprised them with bicycles and bus passes to help ease everyday work transportation burdens.

“Our sales team takes great pride in serving our members and looks for opportunities to make a difference in their lives” said Joe Haddock, chief sales officer, Geisinger Health Plan. “Slocomb Windows and Doors is a long-time client and to be able to give back to its employees is a great feeling.”

Thanks to monetary donations from the sales team and donations from Target, Walmart and the Luzerne County Transportation Authority, GHP’s sales team presented 12 Slocomb employees with new bicycles, helmets and bicycle locks and six employees with two-month bus passes.

According to Carl Slocomb, owner of Slocomb Windows and Doors, the company has approximately 170 employees and approximately 130 of those employees either walk, bike, or ride a bus to work.

“Thank you so much,” said Slocomb employee, Richard Matthews. “I walk to work every day. There’s no words for this.” Looking down at this new bike, he shook his head, “I don’t even want to let go of it.”

This project started a year ago when, Linda Rowe, account executive and service specialist in GHP’s sales department, and a few friends personally donated bicycles to three Slocomb employees.

“Working closing with the company and talking to Carl, I knew many employees struggled with transportation,” said Rowe. “We just wanted to help. Three bikes aren’t much, but to those receiving them, hopefully it will make life a bit easier.”

Once Rowe’s colleagues and leadership caught wind of her donation, they wanted to help, too. Rowe began collecting voluntary donations at quarterly department meetings and a year later it all worked out.

“Slocomb Windows and Doors has been a faithful client of GHP’s since 2001,” said Rowe. “It’s been an absolute pleasure and blessing to give back to these employees. I’m proud of our team. This is what life is about.”
